Holey Donuts

The I Bought it Today Healthy Food Tasting series has been a great success!  We tracked down some of the best new health foods thanks to the participation and dedication of both vendors and foodies.

AND NOW for the finale (and boy have I saved the sweetest for last)...

Frank Dilullo, founder of Holey Donuts has been on my radar for almost a year.  Before the tasting even came to be, I wanted to get my hands on his donuts.  Anything fattening that a company reduces in fat generally has loads of preservatives and mystery ingredients.  Holey Donuts claim to be fresh and void of fillers, so I had to find out, just how “good” are they? I was thrilled when Frank agreed to be a part of our event.

As a health conscious person, I miss several parts of my upbringing.  I grew up two city blocks from a Dunkin' Donuts, so let’s just say the number of Munkins I have had in my lifetime definitely has a comma.   Keeping donuts out of my diet makes my waistline  infinitely happier, but life is a little sad without Homer's fave around.

Frank nailed the solution to figure friendly donuts, and by no accident.  In 1958, his father was one of the first donut franchise owners. He grew up around the calorie and fat laden coffee accompaniment.

Frank found an old donut cutter, a relic from his father’s donut days, and thought he would give donut making a go.  He wanted to reinvent the donut “wheel” and decided to bake them instead of fry them in oil.  When the donuts went to a lab for nutritional data analysis, it turned out that they were incredibly low in fat and calories.  By eliminating the frying process Frank accidentally became the creator of the very first and only low-fat donut.  Not only were they low in all the bad stuff, but they tasted so good he exclaimed a few profanities, giving way to the name Holey Donuts.

The fact that Frank wasn’t setting out to make a low fat donut gave me hope that these might actually taste homemade and lack that greasy burpy aftertaste.  Holey %&*$ Holey Donuts are exactly what I expected if not more.

I saved the donuts for the very end of the Healthy Food Tasting, because if they were as amazing Frank claimed they would be (and all of his QVC fans) I had a feeling no one would want to eat any of the other food!

The donuts ship frozen in protective packaging and on dry ice.  The boxes are perfect for any size family because you can take two out and defrost them per the thawing instructions or use the whole box as a handy dessert for unexpected guests.

We tried and loved the Low Fat Cinnamon Glazed Donut Holes.  They were easy to pop and had cinnamon sugar sticking to our lips just like competitor’s versions do.

The amazing thing is you can have four for 158 calories and 3 grams of fat.  You will never find a donut anywhere else on earth that competes with Holey Donuts' flavor and nutritional value.

Okay, Holey Donuts aren’t health food, but they are a way to indulge without the guilt that comes after a full fat crème filled.  I know what you’re thinking.  If you’re going to do it why not go for the real thing?  Well, normally I would agree, but Holey Donuts make it easy to have something that tastes like the real thing without having to save up calories. The Vanilla Frosted Boston Crème is a baked miracle.  I woke up the morning after the tasting and it was the first thing I reached for!  With 200 calories and under 4 grams of fat, I died and went to donut heaven.

It’s important that I tell you how un-freakin-believable Holey Donuts Jumbo Reduced Fat Cinnamon Buns are. The smell of a shopping mall food court perfumed by the Cinnabon scent is something we are all familiar with (and the 1100 calories that goes with it).  Frank’s version has only 340 calories and 5 grams of fat, and they are so big you will have share your bun even though you won’t want to!

Holey Donuts are only available direct from Frank’s New York plant.  Each batch is completely hand rolled and baked following precise guidelines.  The donuts are immediately frozen and shipped to you for an average price of $11.99 a half dozen.

Holey Donuts taste amazing, look as fancy as any donut I've ever laid eyes on, and deliver big as a guilt free flavor filled treat.  Frank has given I Bought it Today readers a special incentive to TRY HIS DONUTS, FREE SHIPPING with offer code HDFRSH1.
