San Francisco Tourism: 3 Things To See Before You Leave

San Francisco is one of the most famous cities in the world. Ever since its first big growth as a Gold Rush port in the 19th century, San Francisco tourism has been booming. It is home to many famous landmarks that the savvy traveler will not want to miss. However, there are a few that top any list of must-see attractions in the San Francisco area.

The Golden Gate Bridge dominates any discussion of San Francisco tourism. This is by far the most famous bridge in the world, and a recognizable landmark for nearly anyone. It features a viewing area where visitors can park and look out over it, but most people recommend walking along the pedestrian path to get the full experience.

Alcatraz is another iconic San Francisco attraction. This small island about 1.5 miles from the coast is home to one of the most famous prisons in the world. Nicknamed “The Rock,” no prisoner ever escaped from it in the nearly 30 years it operated, although three were lost at sea in an attempt. In order to be sure to see this historical site, make reservations for the tour ahead of time as they fill up quickly.

Fisherman’s Wharf rounds out the top three attractions. This famous neighborhood features Pier 39, a bustling marketplace that draws tourists and locals alike. Other attractions in the area are a decommissioned World War 2 submarine and a restored 19th century whaling ship, the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, and many incredible restaurants. Fisherman’s Wharf is also the site of many special events, such as Fleet Week air shows and a world-renowned 4th of July fireworks show. Lucky visitors may even spy a glimpse of the colonies of sea lions that have taken up residence near the wharf.

There are many things to do in this vibrant city, but some things cannot be missed. Although it also features many other attractions, San Francisco tourism experts agree that these are some of the most popular. If you are planning on visiting San Francisco, make sure to fit these landmarks into your schedule.
